Poidevin wins ‘Combined’ jersey in France

Canadian earns sprint and GPM points on stage 3 of Tour de l'Ardèche, moves into 10th on GC

Rally UHC Cycling’s Sara Poidevin won the Combined jersey on stage 3 of the Tour de l’Ardèche. Poidevin bridged to the day’s main breakaway before going solo on the Côte de Buoux with 25 km remaining and scoring maximum points over the final two climbs. In the nail-biting finale, Poidevin was caught only eight km from the finish and crossed the line in eighth place. The impressive effort was enough to move Poidevin into the top 10 on general classification.

“I felt good today and knew that it was a big gamble, but it was also a good opportunity,” said Poidevin. “I just had to take it and see what I could get out of it. Of course, it’s disappointing to get caught in the finale, but I was far down in the GC after stage 2, so I really had nothing to lose.”

With the temperatures rising and no end to the elevation gains, Poidevin seized the chance to create separation with over 50 km remaining in the stage.

“I saw an opportunity and attacked over the top of the second intermediate sprint point and got a gap, so I just went for it,” said Poidevin. “I was confident at that point I’d get a solid gap because there was a long way to go, a ton of climbing, and it was really hot.”

Poidevin was correct and her lead crept out to the two-minute mark before the peloton began their chase. When she crested the final climb 13 km from the finish, her lead had fallen to 50 seconds. Although Poidevin was eventually reeled in, her performance was a positive sign in what has been a difficult season.

Monday’s 138 km stage 4 takes the riders from Savasse to Mont-Boucher-sur-Jabron. With the fight for the overall likely to continue later in the week, be on the lookout for a breakaway to make it to the line.
