Rally UHC Cycling arrived in the Rocky Mountains this week for the revamped Colorado Classic. The four-day UCI event features 354 km of high-altitude racing from Steamboat Springs on August 22nd to the Denver finale on August 25th. 2017 overall champion Sara Poidevin leads the team against a world-class field.
“The race’s upgrade to UCI status and doubling the number of race days make this edition the most competitive to date,” said Poidevin. “In the past, the GC has favored climbers, but the new courses encourage dynamic and aggressive racing. I’m looking forward to a hard race and see what we can do.”
Joining Poidevin in the hunt for overall honors is Abby Mickey who finished third overall in 2018 and Krista Doebel-Hickok, winner of this year’s summit finish at the Redlands Bicycle Classic. For the sprinter-friendly back half of the race, US and Canadian Criterium Champions Emma White and Allison Beveridge lead the way.
“We have a strong, well-rounded roster that can race aggressively,” said Poidevin. “We’ll be in contention for both stage wins and the overall.”
As seen in action during last week’s Tour of Utah, the team will race in limited-edition “Butterfly Camo” jerseys to help raise awareness and funds for the UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation (UHCCF).
“I think it’s incredibly important for sports organizations and athletes to use their platform to create positive change and raise awareness for causes that are important to them,” said Poidevin. “We understand the importance of teamwork, which is also essential to getting these families the help they need.”
Heading into the Colorado Classic, Poidevin hopes to put a difficult season and a number of setbacks behind her.
“I was trying really hard to have a good year and instead had a lot of residual fatigue and stress early on,” said Poidevin. “But having a team that believes in me and gives me time and space to rest and reset is crucial in making a strong comeback. I’m ready to compete.”
The Colorado Classic will be streamed LIVE on our website starting Thursday, August 22nd at 11:30 am.
