About Kelly

What inspired you to ride?

The cycling community is a wonderful, welcoming group of people. Yes, they have their eccentricities, but it makes it all the more exciting once you become part of the “club.”

Racing obstacle you overcame?

Right in the middle of the pre-Olympic World Cup cycle, I somehow contracted bacterial meningitis. So, only a couple days after returning from the New Zealand World Cup, I was stuck in isolation in the Infectious Disease Suite at a hospital, where I remained for a week. I then had to face the long, hard return to training in time for the next World Cup in three weeks.

Favorite cheat meal?

Dark chocolate

Favorite healthy meal or snack?

Whole grain couscous with chicken breast.

Tip for staying healthy?

Be happy, and if not, ride a bike. Slow or fast, riding has the remarkable ability to cure all ills.

What motivates you to ride?

I like the thrill of speed, the adrenaline of competition. I like winning. I like the challenge of improving, of slowly grinding towards a goal. I like the quiet afternoons and the whir of wheels in the rain, through early morning mist, in the snow, and when there is not a soul out.
